Velvet Ropes, Invites and Opposites
Velvet-rope nightclubs are a fabulous place to look for gender-based marketing tactics that actually work.
Why? An out-of-whack boy/girl ratio equals a really sucky party.
And if it’s a bad party, the feedback is immediate and devastating. You can’t cover it up.
One way to fix it? Change the force-field so we’re on the same team, not opposite sides.

XX Combinator
This weekend, while packing my girls up to go to the Town Park Pool to escape the heat, I had an idea. The more I think about it, the more badly I want it. In the meanwhile, it’s picked up a some steam.
I commented about it to Fred Wilson in an AVC.com comment, who liked it, and then he sent it to Brad Feld, who mentioned it in a blog post today. I mentioned it on the phone to Beth...

Yesterday, they continued a 20-year tradition for July 4th weekend of reading of the Declaration of Independence.
Each of the journalists you know read clauses. For example, Nina Totenberg, who regularly covers the Supreme Court, reads, “He has obstructed the Administration of Justice…”

The Op-Ed Project
I try hard to keep Saturdays and Sundays focused on the kids and my husband. There’s never enough time together, plus there’s always so much stuff that needs to get done. So unless it’s life-or-death, I say no.
But last week, I spent a full Saturday taking a seminar with The Op-Ed Project. My friend, innovation rock star Sara Holoubek, took it and said it was life...
